Report on Marrakech Cinema Festival

Report on Marrakech Cinema Festival

Last week from November 30th  to December 8th  2012, the city of Marrakech hosted one of the most prestigious festivals of  cinema in its 12th edition.

The festival was organised by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre. It also included a ceremony to reward the best Moroccan and foreign films in addition to celebrating the centenary of the Indian cinema.

In parallel with the festival, the Media Centre of the festival organised a seminar which aimed at debating the advantages and drawbacks of cinema in Marrakech.

The seminar gathered almost 500 people at Mamounia Hotel Conference room and there were participants of all sorts such as actors, film directors, cinema critics, festival jury, and a big audience.

Like any festival, The Marrakech cinema festival respected an accurate schedule of activities that included watching and evaluating International and Moroccan films. The seminar also debated the positive and the negative effects of the cinema on Marrakech. Many participants were persuaded that the cinema promotes tourism and contributes to the economical growth of the city by providing jobs for the craftsmen. On the other hand, other participants think that the cinema affects youth negatively.

Finally came the closing ceremony when prize of the Golden Star was awarded to “The Attack” by the Lebanese film director Ziad Doueiri. Many more prizes were also given to successful foreign and Moroccan artists for the best main role and the best scenario.

Judging from the press and critics opinions, the festival was very fruitful and a great number of people were very satisfied with the 12th edition of the Marrakech Cinema Festival and are looking forward to the 13thedition next year.
